I.S.M. was conceived and started by John Harlin ( U.S.) in 1965. No, Edmund Hillary was never even remotely involved. Dougal ( uncan) Haston (Scotland) took over when John died on the 1966 Eiger Direct climb, eventually summited by Dougal and 3 Germans. Dougal died in a skiing accident (avalanche) in Leysin in 1977 and Peter Boardman (U.K.) took over and ran the school until his death in 1982 on Mt. Everest. Pat Littlejohn (U.K.) took over from Pete and has been Director ever since and successfully expanded the ISM programme, started by Pete, and helped the school grow until today it is a highly successful venture employing guides world wide including Switzerland.

Pat Littlejohn was recently given an O.B.E.
